What Is The Cultural Arts Center?
To promote, educate, and provide opportunities in the visual and performing arts
The Cultural Arts Center is a non-profit organization established in May 2002 to connect the Arts to our Community. Housed in the old Southside Elementary School, the Center has been renovated to accommodate various arts and service organizations in the Wiregrass, providing a venue for talented artists to gather and perform. These organizations provide instruction in different areas of the arts, enriching the citizens of Dothan and the surrounding communities.
The Center is home to the Southeast Alabama Community Theatre, the Southeast Alabama Dance Company, the Tri-State Community Orchestra, Dothan Wiregrass Art League, Patti Rutland Jazz, Music South, the National Railroad Historical Society and the Dothan Service League, and Dothan-Houston County Substance Abuse Partnership.
Adult dance and movement classes like Ballroom, Belly Dancing, Tap, Hip Hop, Body Sculpt and Tappercise are taught weekly in The Center Dance Studio. In addition, The Center recently received a grant from the Alabama State Arts Council to provide after school instruction in dance, piano, art, chorus, and strings to underserved children in the area.
Since its establishment, The Center has exposed more than 1,200 children to many different arts disciplines that are not currently available in the public and county school systems. In the future, we hope to see The Center evolve into a fine arts school for the underserved and play an partnership role in the school system.
The Center is also available to rent for a variety of special events and receptions. A state-of-the-art wide screen movie projector was installed enabling The Center to provide our rental clients with audiovisual capabilities for events and receptions. The auditorium and banquet hall provides spacious areas for any special occasion at a reasonable price.
